Beck hall
I can imagine running a business at any time is difficult enough, but running a fully plant based hotel in the wilds of North Yorkshire must take one hell of a commitment. Beck Hall has gone for it in becoming Englands first plant based hotel, and anticipation was high, with the end result being somewhere I can’t recommend highly enough, not just the food, but the ambience, location and friendly dedicated hotel owners and staff.
We’d booked this both as a result of a random internet search but also due to a stellar review from Those Vegan Guys. Check these guys out for food inspiration, restaurant reviews and just general niceness, from 2 ordinary blokes (no offense) who just come across as genuine people doing what they can to change the food narrative.
Back to Beck Hall though.
Getting there was an adventure in itself, as we raced towards the hotel having dropped the 2 idiots off at their normal kennels, hoping to arrive before storm Isha hit. In reality we got there before the worst of it, but only just!
On the first night the plan was to meet up with old friends who lived not too far down the road for an evening meal. Storm Isha however had other ideas resulting in a Sunday evening meal for two.
I should also say that from the off, the hotel were attentive to the needs of their guests, providing fresh alternatives to milk to take your room, and vegan chocolates when you got there.
We had a two night package that included meals on both days, with breakfast to boot. Superb value for money, albeit helped by the off season timing of the trip.
Night 1 was a stunning start, with Seitan baby back ribs and Samosas starting off the meal, followed by ‘Steak’ pudding for Mrs T and seitan short rib for me. I was jealous enough of Mrs T’s choice that night 2 had to be that one for me.
Dessert had to be the sticky toffee pudding, my favourite ever, and the vegan version was good if not one with wow factor I was maybe waiting for (it turned out night 2’s dessert was the one I was waiting for).
Full of food (and alcohol) we retired to the little space reserved for hotel guests only for a nightcap, wondering if the rain was going to stop to actually get out the next day.
